Masonite Beams participates in major research project about environmentally friendly adhesives

2024-10-09

The aim is to create a world-leading research environment and accelerate the development of high-performance and environmentally friendly adhesives for industry. The BioGlue-Centre project is funded by Vinnova with SEK 109 million and involves several different players, including universities, adhesive manufacturers and companies in the manufacturing industry.

To reduce climate impact and improve recycling, the furniture, construction and packaging sectors are now researching bio-based alternatives to adhesives. IKEA, Stora Enso, Tetrapak and Lantmännen are some of the companies involved in the project.

– Adhesives are essential for the production of modern, functional products. We know how bonding works for traditional adhesives, but we don't know exactly how it works with bio-based adhesives. Studying how this works is important for the development and implementation of bio-based adhesives, says Professor Stergios Adamopoulos, responsible for BioGlue-Centre.

The project started in January and runs for five years

The first meeting took place in Uppsala, with 44 committed participants representing different backgrounds and experience. The next meeting will be held in June at Linné University and the project is expected to last for five years.

– Both we and the industry are demanding a bio-based adhesive. By bringing several players together, we can facilitate a faster route to finding a solution. This research project comes at the right time, and we're looking for a solution that we can apply as soon as possible in our production of I-joists, says Tommy Persson, Head of Research and Development at Masonite Beams.

The research project is an important step towards a more sustainable future for industry. Read more about the project here!
